Birth Preferences

Birth is inherently unpredictable, but going into it without at least a loose game plan leaves all of your options in the hands of caregivers whose priorities might be different from your own. So creating a list that outlines your preferences of the most common birth options is a great way to communicate your views to your caregiver.

Happy Birth Way has an easy checklist for you to review with your partner. Take some time to explore the options (many of which you'll find right here at HappyBirthWay.com) and decide what is right for you. Then print out your preferences and review them with your caregiver at your next appointment.

If your caregiver doesn't support a preference that is particularly important to you, ask them for the studies or the medical literature that supports their position. Once you hear another opinion, then you can weigh the options. Be sure to have a copy of your Birth Preferences added to your medical records.

For a little help on how to share your Birth Preferences with your caregiver, see Informed Consent. There you'll find a list of questions you can ask that will help make a particular position more clear, as well as tips for how to convey your own preferences.

Sometimes, for medical reasons or even to save the life of a mother or baby, birth preferences cannot be honored, resulting in unexpected medical interventions.  This can cause a traumatic birth experiences for the mother, and Solace for Mothers can help.  They are a national support group that assists mothers through the challenges they faced during their births.  If you know someone who might benefit from their services, please pass along the website:  www.solaceformothers.org.

What is a Doula?

A doula is a non-medical labor assistant who physically and emotionally supports a mom and her partner during labor, as depicted in this beautiful montage of Samuel's birth.

Cesarean Birth Rate

The cesarean birth rate in the United States is teetering around the 40% mark.  Some of the hospitals in the Tampa Bay area have already exceeded that.  Find out here how your hospital is doing.
